One-on-one Private Training

Private training can give you the information and skills needed to address whatever challenges you and your dog are facing. Whether you are struggling with some aspect of your dog's behaviour or simply seeking ways to improve the bond you share, I can demonstrate a range of strategies based on scientific learning principles.

Dog training issues that I can help with include:

  • introducing a new puppy into the home: toilet training, socialisation, dealing with puppy nipping and biting, training manners and basic obedience
  • training basic obedience (sit, drop, stay, heel, recall, etc)
  • trick training for fun, relationship-building and mental stimulation
  • dealing with challenges such as:
    • toilet training problems
    • excessive barking
    • destructive behaviour/digging
    • jumping on people
    • resource guarding
  • helping dogs overcome fear or arousal issues such as:
    • over-excitement around people/dogs
    • barking/growling/lunging at people/dogs
    • anxiety/nervousness/fear around people/dogs/objects/etc

I use modern dog training methods based on the scientific learning principles of classical and operant conditioning. I will assess dog training challenges individually and apply appropriate strategies based on the philosophy of using the "most positive, least intrusive" method, taking into account what is achievable and what is in the dog's best interests. I would describe myself as a motivational or rewards-based trainer because I predominantly use positive reinforcement to teach dogs how I want them to behave. My training methods could also be labelled "force-free" since I avoid using coercion, intimidation or pain when training dogs.

An initial consultation will typically involve me asking a lot of questions about you and your dog and your reasons for seeking help, as well as making observations of your dog's behaviour. My aim is to clearly identify the issue and provide you with the relevant skills and information needed. We will set realistic goals and I will provide as much follow-up as is required.

I do not take on cases of dog aggression where serious injury has occurred or is reasonably likely to occur. I believe these dogs require the very best of care and as such, I recommend seeing a specialist with extensive experience in dealing with such cases. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like a suitable referral.
