My name is Danielle and I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA).
My academic and professional background is orginally in human psychology (Masters in Clinical Psychology from Western Sydney Uni). However, my black lab Crosby introduced me to the world of dog training and behaviour, which led to my current obsession with all things DOG - and I believe in following your passions! I am lucky that I have many transferable skills from my psychology career to bring with me to working with canines - from behaviour analysis and case formulation, to a thorough understanding of learning principles. As studies of canine cognition and behaviour have exploded in recent years, it is also extremely useful to have a measure of scientific literacy and a foundation in research design and methodology, in order to critically evaluate new information and perspectives.
I have successfully completed certification in dog training through Sydney TAFE (2014 Statement of Attainment in Dog Training), learning from two very experienced and successful dog trainers (Steve and Vicki Austin). This course involved hands-on experience with a variety of dogs and focused on the science of training and dog behaviour. In 2019 I completed Dr Susan Friedman’s Living and Learning with Animals course - an in-depth look at behaviour analysis. I have also completed the Aggression in Dogs Master course with Michael Shikashio. Continuing professional education is a requirement for my accreditation with the US-based Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers.
In 2024 I participated in the NACSW Instructor Program for K9 Nose Work™ and currently teach multiple Nose Work classes for K9 Nose Time at North Rocks and Castle Hill. I am also a Level 1 Judge for ACSW Nose Work trials.
To further expand my understanding of dogs and scent, I have recently completed the Mantrailing Global Instructor Course and am now a Certified Mantrailing Instructor. We will be introducing Mantrailing workshops in the very near future!
My "dog training philosophy" is planted firmly in treating dogs with kindness and fairness, giving them choice and autonomy wherever possible, and respecting and enjoying their perfectly imperfect “dogginess”. I am a force-free trainer - I do not use aversives as an intentional part of training or behaviour change. My aim is to set dogs up for success by meeting their needs, adjusting their environment as needed, and building skills to navigate the situations they may find themselves in. I believe clarity of communication and strong relationship-building are the foundations of living harmoniously with our dogs.
My dogs are my family. I currently share my life with Pippin (12yo English Springer Spaniel), Rory (8yo Golden Retriever), Nettle (2yo Working Cocker Spaniel) and Bug (1yo Working Cocker Spaniel). We are all very active in scent work activities. I’ve previously lived with Golden Retrievers, an Alaskan Malamute, as well as my beloved blind black Labrador. Oh, and I also have a house full of rescue cats (don’t ask how many).
