My name is Danielle and I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA).

My academic and professional background is in human psychology (Masters in Clinical Psychology). However, my interest in dog behaviour and training kept growing and growing... to the point where I realised I wanted to take the step towards making a "job" out of working with dogs. I am lucky that I have many transferable skills from my psychology career to bring with me - from behaviour analysis, case formulation and treatment planning to an understanding of learning principles. Indeed, the basic methods for treating fear in people and dogs are very similar - the only difference is that you can't explain what you are doing to the dog (which does make it a bit trickier)!

I have successfully completed certification in dog training through Sydney TAFE (Statement of Attainment in Dog Training), learning from two very experienced and successful dog trainers (Steve and Vicki Austin). This course involved hands-on experience with a variety of dogs and focused on the science of training and dog behaviour. I undertake further learning at every opportunity and recently completed Dr Susan Friedman’s Living and Learning with Animals course - an in-depth look at behaviour analysis. I have also completed the Aggression in Dogs Master course with Michael Shikashio. Continuing professional education is a requirement for my accreditation with the US-based Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers.

I am currently an Obedience Instructor at my local club (Brush Farm Dog Training Club), where I work with a range of lovely people and dogs every weekend. I am a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers Australia (APDT Australia).

My "dog training philosophy" is drawn from a range of inspirations - Patricia McConnell, Denise Fenzi, Sarah Stremming, Leslie McDevitt, Sarah Owings, Suzanne Clothier, and Grisha Stewart to name just a few... people who focus on the joy dogs bring to our lives and who treat dogs with respect and kindness. I live with three dogs - Crosby, Pippin and Rory - who make me laugh every day and constantly provide opportunities for me to learn more about dog behaviour. I train my dogs in competition obedience, tricks and scent detection (nose work).

My goal with CONFIDENT CANINES is to help improve the lives of dogs. I understand that dogs play an important role in our lives and deserve to be treated with patience and kindness. I believe many people would be surprised at the amazing things their dogs are actually capable of. I aim to make it easier for people to live happier and more fulfilling lives with their dogs.
